About This Quote

To remember those who have been important to us and those who were harmed by our actions. Memory is selective, meaning that we only choose to remember some events and forget others. For instance, we may remember some of the best parts of a holiday, but we can easily forget the worst things – so this means our memory is selective. But it’s not what we want – we want a memory that ultimately tells a story of a happy time, so we need to be selective with what we choose to remember. This means being careful about what you choose to remember – because it could have been bad. Memory is logical – most people realise that if you cannot prove something, then it doesn’t exist.

However, most people also believe that memories are not logical – they’re subjective. In fact that’s exactly what memory is – a recollection of an event based on the stories we tell ourselves about what happened. But this means our memories can be wrong – how can they be wrong if they’re based on a subjective experience? There’s a reason why people say they feel different after a break up or a relationship has ended – because our memories are based on those experiences.

If you stick with someone long enough you will begin to change as your memory of those experiences comes back to your mind as the relationship ends. Whether this is good or bad depends on your perspective - or as Nelson Mandela said: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” The idea that Nelson Mandela expressed here is one that take all sorts of different forms - but the underlying principle remains the same: keep moving forward and keep fighting for what you believe in - because it's worth fighting for.
